Sunset & Vine is a 620,000 SF retail, entertainment and residential "urban village" central to the revitalization of Hollywood's commercial core. Inspired by the neighborhood's historic urban fabric, this project brings urbanism and vitality back to Hollywood. Recognizing the area's shortage of urban open space, the owner felt the development of a retail alley as an extension of Vine Street and the Hollywood Walk of Fame would make this project a true destination; a vibrant district with a lively 24-hour pedestrian experience.
Keeping the owner's philosophy at the forefront, the Meléndrez design team responded with a retail alley, a series of residential courtyards, and streetscape improvements. The retail alley serves as a pocket park, an amenity available to the general public. The garden courtyards are reminiscent of early 20th century Los Angeles residential design, and provide building residents with a series of outdoor living rooms. These gathering spaces are organized around fireplaces and water features, and are intended for recreation and relaxation. Materials used for the streetscape improvements emulate the terrazzo paving of the adjacent Walk of Fame.
A true success, the corner of Sunset & Vine is alive again. The public now sees a safe place to congregate and a luxurious, sought after address. The resulting project is a civic icon that celebrates the area's rich cultural past, and demonstrates what Hollywood urbanism can become.
