Meléndrez was the lead consultant on the Old Pasadena Streetscapes and Alley Walkways Implementation Plan, which involved the development and enhancement of Old Pasadena, a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. Within the project area there are 50 restaurants, 135 retail and service commercial establishments, 110 office suites, two cineplexes and 205 residential units. The Old Pasadena area attracts approximately 20,000 visitors on weekend evenings as well as a growing daytime employee and retail shopper population.
The project included renovation of historic elements and enhancement of the district's historic character, as well as linkages throughout the district and connections to adjacent residential areas and transit stops. Gateways and signage designs were developed for the project area. Historic lighting and pedestrian amenities were implemented on all streets. Design solutions were identified for pedestrian and service conflicts and underutilized spaces. Ideas for programming of public spaces were also developed. Meléndrez facilitated consensus for this project through a series of six community meetings.
The scope of services included Community Consensus Planning, Concept Refinement, Design Development and Construction Documents, Material Specifications, Capital and Operations Cost Estimates, Phasing and an Implementation Plan.
