The Companion Animal Center proposed by The Annenberg Foundation in Rancho Palos Verdes will provide interactive educational exhibits, volunteer and community service opportunities, animal behavioral training, medical and adoption services, and state of the art communications and information sharing capabilities. The proposed site for the project is at the edge of a bluff above the Pacific Ocean. A habitat reserve wraps around the site to the northeast. Immediately to the southwest lies the Point Vicente Lighthouse, a historic landmark for the Peninsula.

The design for the Companion Animal Center has evolved from its context. The natural progression of ocean, to coastal zone, to bluff, to upland emerged as an organizing element to guide the on-site interpretive elements. The Point Vicente Interpretive Center (PVIC) itself tells the story of the marine world through exhibits and activities focused on life in the ocean, as well as life along the edge of the ocean on the Peninsula. An "eco canyon" is envisioned serving as a connecting spine of pathways, and interpretive elements, from PVIC to the proposed Companion Animal Facility.

Site design will incorporate best management practices for storm water management, including capturing and treating on site run off in retention areas and bio-swales, and using permeable paving as possible and practical to minimize runoff. The dry creek bed envisioned as a focal point within the "eco-canyon" area will serve both as an interpretive area, and function as a storm water management area when the site is wet. Planting will complement and evoke the natural setting of the site by featuring native and drought tolerant local plant materials.
