Sunset & Vine is a 620,000 SF retail, entertainment and residential “urban village” central to the revitalization of Hollywood’s commercial core. Inspired by the neighborhood’s historic urban fabric, the project stands as the first significant housing development planned and built in Hollywood in 50 years, as well as a catalyst for additional infill developments in the re-emergence of this celebrated district.
The apartment units of the project are organized along linear courtyards where Meléndrez created a series of outdoor rooms reminiscent of early 20th century Los Angeles courtyard housing while emulating the modern feel of a hip boutique hotel. This design extends the residential interiors into the open common space and divides the linear courts into five intimate outdoor “living rooms” that encourage interaction and a shared sense of community among residents. Unique identities for each living room are expressed with water features, pottery, distinctive plantings, music and outdoor hearths. Color, texture, and sound lend to the individual character of each court with materials selected for architectural properties evocative of traditional Southern California vernacular. Unique outdoor furniture pieces were selected to complete the distinctive feel of each of the rooms, and reinforce the boutique hotel experience in this residential context. At street level, the existing terrazzo paving of the adjacent Walk of Fame, and a retail alley punctuated by palm trees, potted papyrus, and café tables integrate the project with the vibrant surroundings of Vine Street, and contribute to the active street life of this urban district.
A true success, the corner of Sunset & Vine is alive again. The resulting project is a civic icon that celebrates the area’s rich cultural past, and demonstrates what Hollywood urbanism can become.
