In the Pacific Design Center renovation, rolling waves of grass, iconic metal sculptures, a plaza with a resplendent fountain, and distinctive and colorful succulents and annuals combine to create a welcoming entry to the design community in West Hollywood. The Meléndrez team was engaged by the building's out-of-state owner to act as the executive landscape architect, and help the project's lead designer navigate through local politics and permitting channels. New York City-based Thomas Balsley Associates was retained as the lead designer.

Taking its cues from the look and feel of the architecture of the Pacific Design Center, the project team created a contemporary design that fits into the context and scale of the building, while bringing the feel of the massive architecture down to a more human scale. Two decidedly different sides of the building offer contrasting aesthetics, yet remain cohesive by tying the building and landscape together as a unified whole. The grass waves and sculptures on the Melrose Avenue side of the building are playful and create a park-like setting available for community use. The formal design and amenities of the San Vicente plaza create a coveted venue for design industry and Hollywood events.

The collaboration between design landscape architect and executive landscape architect escalated as the project progressed. As each firm gained trust and respect for one another, the role of the Meléndrez team evolved into one of true collaborator during the design process. The resulting project respects and complements the landmark status of the Pelli-designed green and blue buildings.
