Located on a one-acre site in an East Los Angeles, Parque de los Sueños offers the community a much-needed respite in a highly urbanized area. The development of this park was a collaborative effort between several public agencies and non-profit organizations, including Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina, the County of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, the Community Development Commission and the Shane’s Inspiration Foundation.
The park was designed with a “Space Travel” theme, and includes play areas for children ages 2-5 and 5-12, sensory/interpretive exploration areas, along with a basketball court, picnic shelter and restroom facilities. The colorful planetary equipment features an interactive shuttle with movable controls, steering instruments, and wide wings for climbing offering children with special needs the opportunity to practice balance, eye-hand coordination, and upper body strengthening. Older children can go for a space walk along sturdy netting and hubs provide the ideal gathering places for interplanetary chatting and stargazing through periscopes both of which encourage communication skills and coordination. A fully accessible three-foot-high maze provides for hours of active and imaginative play. Public art installations, including a mural that celebrates the rich culture of the predominantly Latino neighborhood, double as elements that keep children inside the perimeter of the park and safe from vehicular traffic.
Security lighting and increased police presence discourages potential undesirable activity. Special attention was given to the materials used on the site, with metal and painted surfaces used in order to facilitate easy property maintenance.
