In early August, Meléndrez participated in the first 100% solar powered festival on the Eastside at Mariachi Plaza, called Eastside Sol.  Our design team envisioned how solar arrays could be incorporated into Mariachi Plaza for this event that strove to raise awareness about alternative energy options.  The event attracted hundreds of eastside residents.

The Melendrez design team had fun researching solar options and precedents and brought best practice knowledge to develop a solar concept for the plaza. Over internal design charrettes, the team designed a set of solar shade structures and flexible solar canopy solution. The design hosts up to 4,000 square feet of solar photovoltaics and provides shade for plaza users, outlet stations to charge electronics, artistic sculptural elements in the plaza, and the flexibility to retract to make room for events, which often happen at the plaza.  The installation would produce up to 80,000 kw/h of electricity a year.
