Today Holland Partner Group hosted a ground breaking ceremony to celebrate construction beginning on Vibiana Apartments. The seven story mixed-use development is located adjacent to Saint Vibiana Cathedral in the Little Tokyo district of Downtown Los Angeles.

Ground level retail will be activated by an inviting shared entry courtyard, extending the streetscape and activating the public realm. The design plays homage to the interplay between the new building’s modern design and the Cathedral’s Baroque-inspired Italianate design while also focusing on strong geometry and sustainable practices. The courtyard uses contemporary features and aesthetic detailing to seamlessly blend the contrasting historic qualities of the Cathedral with the modern building design. Tall low-impact development planters wrap the building to soften the focal point for first floor residents’ window view shed and also cleanse on-site water as it filters off-site.

A green roof garden creates an amenity for residents, complete with pool, sun deck, entrainment space, dining and barbeque areas. A system of raised painted steel planters and strong geometric pathways enhance the dramatic experience of walking through the garden and promote discovery of destination spaces. Backlit, perforated steel panels create interesting sculptural pieces throughout the day and into the evening. A sustainable and hearty plant palette is used to combat the intensities and harsh conditions a roof deck can endure.
