South LA's New Village

October 04, 2017

One of the largest building projects ever undertaken by USC, the new $700-million Village campus houses eight residential colleges, a conference center, a Trader Joes, a mobility hub, and an array of retail shops.  RELM incorporated USC’s ornate Italian brickwork and paving patterns throughout the hardscape, softening the environment with bosques of camphor of trees, a central water feature, and several verdant gathering nodes.  The Village demonstrates USC’s desire to improve the quality of space and economy in South Los Angeles.

If realized, the cap park will literally unify one of Los Angeles county’s largest cities with its commercial and residential centers.

Top billings for Marsh Park

October 10, 2016

Melendrez wins top honors at ASLA’s SoCal Design Awards for Marsh Park, a former glass factory turned park.  A robust yet compact footprint uses native ecology to create a vibrant green space inclusive of an arroyo and river marsh system used to treat urban run off before pollutants enter the river ecology. Though discrete, the landscape renders a vibrant environment connecting visitors to bike ways and the Los Angeles River,  transforming a derelict site into a prized neighborhood park space and access point.
