Broadway Streetscape Design Team honored at Bringing Back Broadway 2nd Anniversary Celebration
On February 19, 2010, Councilmember José Huizar recognized Meléndrez and the Broadway Streetscape Master Plan Design Team at the Bringing Back Broadway 2nd Anniversary Celebration honoring outstanding accomplishments to the Bringing Back Broadway initiative. Meléndrez' Darren Shirai, Valerie Watson, Tony Lopez, Scott Baker and Melani Smith, along with Paul Nagakura and Robin Perkins of Selbert Perkins Design, and Jeesong Chung and Bill Delo of IBI Group, were Design Team members on hand to accept the award. Not pictured are Andy Davey of Selbert Perkins, and Gary Hartnett, Guy de Lijster and David Aulwes of IBI Group.

Vdara Opens at City Center, Las Vegas
Melendrez was responsible for the design and landscape architecture of Vdara Hotel and Spa, Harmon Park and the public open spaces of Harmon Circle as part of the City Center development in Las Vegas. Vdara maintains urban sensibilities throughout, to match the vision of City Center differentiating itself from traditional Las Vegas Boulevard developments. Melendrez created the nearly one-acre Sky Pool and Lounge, located on the third floor above the main lobby.

LAPD Police Administration Building a "surprisingly successful piece of urban design."
LA Times architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne lends his perspective on the new LAPD Headquarters in Downtown Los Angeles, situated across from City Hall. Melendrez composed the water-efficient landscape design to open the site to public use and offer a softened, inviting streetscape.

Melendrez is honored to be recognized as part of design teams for three projects given 2009 AIA Los Angeles Design Awards:
  • LAPD Police Administration Building - AIA/LA Building Team of the Year
  • Hollenbeck Community Police Station - Cultural Affairs Commission Design Award - Honor Award; Architectural Foundation of Los Angeles (AFLA) Design Green Award - Citation for LEED-NC Gold
  • Olympic Police Station - Cultural Affairs Commission - Merit Award

ULI FutureBuild Los Angeles Conference October 20, 2009:
Melendrez was an exhibitor at the inagural ULI FutureBuild Los Angeles conference, at which Melani Smith, along with Calvin Abe of Ahbe Landscape Architects, led a lively roundtable discussion on sustainable landscaping. FutureBuild LA brought together those with key industry roles in sustainable building practices to share knowledge and expertise.

LAPD Police Administration Building Grand Opening Celebration October 24, 2009:
Join us for the LAPD PAB Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, October 24th at 10:00AM, Downtown Los Angeles at First and Main, across from City Hall. Melendrez created the landscape design, composed of vibrant drought-tolerant plantings throughout, and featuring garden terraces, public plazas and a community green. Also take note of the recently installed public art along Spring Street and the Fallen Officers Memorial on the upper plaza. Melendrez is proud to be a part of the 2009 AIA/LA Building Team of the Year for this project. Come celebrate with us!

Melendrez receives top award from AIA/LA:
Melendrez is a member of the AIA/LA 2009 Building Team of the Year Award as Landscape Architect for the Los Angeles Police Department Headquarters Facility in Downtown Los Angeles. The award acknowledges the full range of individuals involved in creating an exceptional building.

Mayor's Design Advisory Panel:
Melani Smith has been invited by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to join his Design Advisory Panel, which will assist the Cultural Affairs Commission with its mandated duties to review the design fo all public projects, as well as all private projects constructed on or over public property.

Santa Monica College Campus Quad:
Melendrez leads the visioning and design effort of a diverse consultant team to create a new campus quad for Santa Monica College.

AIA Mobius LA / Dwell on Design Conference June 25-27, 2009:
Melani Smith participated in a panel session with Ted Tanner of AEG, Martha Wellborne of the Grand Avenue Authority, and Jessica Wethington McLean of Councilman Jose Huizar's Bringing Back Broadway initiative, titled, "Creating The THERE There: New Places, Public Spaces And Mobility Choices for Downtown LA."

Envisioning Open Space in Donwtown Los Angeles (EOS/LA):
Melendrez has for seven months been participating in the Central City Association's Parks Working Group. This involvement culminated in a workshop in June with CCA members, City of LA staff and elected officials staff, to present and discuss a strategic approach to addressing the pressing open space needs in downtown Los Angeles.

LAPD Headquarters Facility:
Working closely with the architect and Bureau of Engineering, Melendrez was integral in developing the site design of the LAPD Headquarters Facility that is envisioned as the next great civic space within a renewed downtown.

Broadway Streetscape Master Plan:
Melendrez is working with the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles (CRA/LA) and Bringing Back Broadway, a public-private partnership initiative led by Councilmember Jose Huizar, to create the Broadway Streetscape Master Plan. The Plan will provide a kit-of-parts for streetscape and infrastructure improvements that will rehabilitate the street and enhance the pedestrian, future streetcar, bus and other transit experience, support a thriving theater district, activate and encourage life on the street to spur economic development, and encourage reusing and celebrating existing buildings and historic assets. Walking tours, photo submissions and public workshops are underway as part of the outreach process, capturing the community's thoughts and ideas about a vision for Broadway.
