Tomorrow at the California State APA Conference, Meléndrez will receive State APA Awards for Pop-Up Michigan Avenue Neighborhood Greenway (MANGo) and Broadway Streetscape Master Plan.

Melani Smith participated today in the inaugural PALAPA (Professional Architect & Landscape Architect Practitioners Assembly) event focusing on enhancing Low Impact Development (LID) and LID permitting for practitioners. The forum brought together leadership from AIA|LA, APA-LA, ASLA and City of LA Bureau of Sanitation (LASAN) to highlight Los Angeles’ watershed needs, opportunities and constraints, and the utilization of storm water to achieve Low Impact Development (LID).

Principal Melani Smith, AICP, and Associate Amber Hawkes, AICP, will be participating on two panels at this year’s California APA (American Planning Association) Conference.

The efforts of “Bringing Back Broadway” took another major step forward as the Broadway Dress Rehearsal held its “Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony”, on August 28th. Held in front of the Grand Central Market, city staff members, representatives from the business improvement districts, and Councilman José Huizar, gathered together to celebrate the official opening of the temporary streetscape installation.

Earlier this year we announced the construction of the Marsh Park expansion. We are now excited to share Marsh Park’s new expansion held its grand opening on Saturday, August 16th! The public event, hosted by the Mountains Recreation Conservation Authority (MRCA) provided free refreshments and live music to create a festive mood.

Since 2012 Meléndrez has had the privilege to support AC Martin Partners as the landscape architect for the Wilshire Grand project in downtown Los Angeles. There have been many significant design opportunities for us on the project:  creating a new public plaza and open space at grade at a key location in downtown, enlivening the streetscape on crucial downtown corridors, and creating rich amenity spaces that patrons of the hotel will enjoy in the future.

Meléndrez recently completed The Pacific Boulevard Streetscape Master Plan, which envisions a dramatic transformation of a major commercial corridor in Downtown Huntington Park. One of the more impactful aspects of this project is the proposed “Pacific Promenade”. Taking inspiration from Barcelona’s Las Ramblas, The Pacific Promenade will become a 30’ wide public plaza space in the middle of the Boulevard.

As Meléndrez approaches our 30th anniversary, we are passionate about our work, proud of our people, and inspired by our happening metropolis. Though we remain rooted in the quickly evolving Downtown Los Angeles community, our path now joins with internationally recognized landscape architect Charles Anderson, FASLA.

On July 14th, urban designers at Melendrez led the ‘West Long Beach Livability Implementation Plan’ team in a tour of the project area on the west side of Long Beach. The project team includes the City of Long Beach and the Port of Long Beach.

The purpose of the tour was to introduce and discuss various planning projects related to improving the livability of the area. Projects that are in progress or that have been planned in the study area.

Principal Charles Anderson and Associate Kelly Majewski traveled to Athens, Greece last week for the Hellinikon press conference. The project spearheaded by Lamda Development includes plans to create a 200 hectare Metropolitan Park and mixed-use development including commercial, residential, seafront redevelopment, and tourist attractions.

Multiple Meléndrez projects are being honored at the APA LA Awards tonight at the Historic Los Angeles Theater on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles! Pop-Up MANGo, Broadway Streetscape Master Plan, Space 134, and Metro’s First Last Mile Strategic Plan & Planning Guidelines are all receiving awards in various categories. The event includes theater and walking tours, the award ceremony and reception.

On Tuesday morning, Mayor Eric Garcetti unveiled the first 15 streets that would be transformed under his “Great Streets” Program. Rather than having the usual press conference, the Mayor and Councilmember Mitchell Englander’s office hosted a Pop-Up street event on Reseda Boulevard in front of a collection of small businesses that would benefit from an improved Reseda Boulevard. Many community partners came out to help celebrate the event and to support the new “Great Streets” initiative.

For the last 12 years, Century Villages at Cabrillo has been breaking the cycle of homelessness by providing permanently supportive housing at their 27-acre campus community in west Long Beach. While providing housing to people who need it most, their main campus is located in one of the areas in Long Beach most impacted by diesel emissions from regional goods movement.

As Los Angeles County takes strides to move away from automobile dependency and towards multi-modal transportation through multiple initiatives, Metro has identified the need to make first and last mile access to stations easier and more comfortable, and recently adopted the First/Last Mile Strategic Plan & Planning Guidelines.

Bixby Park is an iconic and historic park within Long Beach, with a breathtaking oceanfront view. The master plan of the park dates back to 1998. Meléndrez is leading a public process to update the plan to address its future, refresh the park and address neighborhood concerns. The park is uniquely divided into quadrants by four streets, resulting in disconnection between the different park areas, and barriers between the park and adjacent neighborhoods.

Principal Scott Baker joins Brian League of University of Southern California to co-moderate the roundtable discussion on “Health Care Driven Community Development – USC Health Science Campus” at the ULI Los Angeles Urban Marketplace. The 79-acre Health Science Campus is a community asset, as it provides biomedical research, specializing in cancer, gene therapy, the neurosciences and transplantation biology.

Marsh Park, located in the Elysian Valley and adjacent to the Los Angeles River bike path, has plans for an expansion of the park. The new 3-acre site, which was an old asphalt lot, is undergoing a dramatic transformation. The expansion of the site is intended to complement the already existing Marsh Park as well as the Skate Park.
