Meléndrez supported Los Angeles Walks this year by donating to make their publication “Footnotes” possible. The second edition of the publication provides an annual report on walking in Los Angeles, a status on the streets structure, and outlines upcoming enhancements and improvements. Utilizing pedestrian counts, the publication provides data on where people are walking throughout Los Angeles and highlights them with short stories from a variety of people.

Meléndrez Principal, Melani Smith, wrote a piece on 7th Street and Figueroa outlining the busy corner in the ever-growing Downtown Los Angeles. With a multitude of developments underway along the corridor, one of the busiest Metro stations in the whole system, and over 40 buses stopping per hour on one stretch, the intersection is clearly an important hub of activity in Downtown Los Angeles. Meléndrez studied the intersection as part of our work on the 7th Street Improvements Project, emanating out of the Wilshire Grand Hotel project. To better accommodate the variety of modes using the corridor, we proposed a scramble crossing at 7th and Fig, consolidated transit boarding platforms, protected bike lanes connecting to the “MyFig” protected lanes, as well as on-street flex space for people to use, bike share, or district valet to populate.
