CALIFORNIA APA CONFERENCE 2014

Principal Melani Smith, AICP, and Associate Amber Hawkes, AICP, will be participating on two panels at this year’s California APA (American Planning Association) Conference. Melani will be speaking on the “Extreme Makeover: Corridor Edition” panel about the revitalization of commercial corridors, and Amber will be speaking on the in “Lessons from Don Draper – What Planners Can Learn from the Advertising World” panel  about how the advertising world can influence planners.

“Extreme Makeover: Corridor Edition” will be moderated by Veronica Siranosian, AICP, LEED GA of URS, and will feature panelists, Mark Yamorone, AICP from the City of Pasadena Department of Transportation and Tim Fremaux, PE, from the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. Lately, revitalizing commercial corridors has been a topic that has generated much discussion in the planning world. This is especially true in the City of Los Angeles where Mayor Eric Garcetti has chosen 15 “Great Streets” to revitalize during his term.  Meléndrez has been busy working on projects that revitalize commercial corridors, with streetscape projects like “Bringing Back Broadway” and “My Figueroa”, which aim to transform auto-oriented streets into places that better accommodates pedestrians, cyclists, open spaces, and public transportation.

The panel will offer insight on ‘best practices’ and share their experiences revitalizing the, Historic Route 66, Colorado Boulevard, and the Figueroa Corridor. Be sure to attend the session which will be held at the Disneyland Resort in the North Exhibit Hall G/H on Sunday, September 14th, from 9:45 AM - 11:45 AM. 

“Lessons from Don Draper – What Planners Can Learn from the Advertising World” will be moderated by Georgia Sheridan, AICP, Planner, City of West Hollywood. The panel will discuss seven lessons planners can learn from the advertising world to help planners prepare and present their ideas to the public in ways that are engaging and lasting. Be sure to attend the session which will be held at the Disneyland Resort in the North Exhibit Hall D/E on Tuesday, September 16th, from 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM.
